The most probable explanation at present is, that it was a hollow in rock into which the shaft cuts accidentally, its opening being closed up by the original builders. The shaft itself still descends.

Dr. Junker has found a statue pair of which I have not yet seen.

The weather has now settled again and is warmer and with little wind.

Space between mastabas VIII 4 - 5 [= G 2160 - G 2180] now cleared. Completely filled with later graves and additions to mastabas. Pits arranged in regular parallel groups oriented slightly differently from original mastabas.
Space between VIII 4 [= G 2160] and IX 4 [= G 2170] similarly filled.
The bricks in the walls of mud chapel of IX 3 [= G 2150] are approximately 16 by 33 by 9. Walls coated with a thin white stucco as in Menkaure queen's temple. Brickwork laid as in this and valley temple bound as shown. [ILLUSTRATION]
