Tuesday, December 29, 1925.
Day of rest for men.

I was presented to the King Fuad I, this morning at 11 a.m. by the American minister Dr. Morton Howell. His Majesty was very kind and gave me half an hour. I thanked him for his interest in my history of Ethiopia and presented him with a copy of Kerma. We talked about the "new tomb", our excavations in the Sudan and at Giza, the great Cairo Museum, the tricks of dealers in antiquities. I carefully refrained from saying anything about the general archaeological situation in Egypt or anything which could have even an indirect bearing on that question. I also had some minutes conversation with the Grand Chamberlain and with Hassanein Bey.
