Work on:
(1) railroad embankment and street G I-b [street G 7000]
(2) Street between G I-b and G I-a, [avenue G 1]
(3) G 7131 pit-chamber

Began running eight wagons (four pairs). The line is getting shorter but the force is largely increased and the lift has diminished from 7 to 5 meters (or less). The long carry is more than compensated by diminished lift and increased force.
[ILLUSTRATION] The pair on "a" after loading are run out to "e" to be dumped on same line. The pair on "b" are then loaded as they stand. The pair of "c" are shifted to "a" as emptied. The pair on "d" are moved to "c" # when the pair on "b" have been loaded, they run out to "d" and all the empties shift forward as before # and so on. This single line system was adopted because the widening of the embankment for a double line system (the better) would have entailed too great a shifting of debris for so short a job.

(1) Street G 7000
Railroad embankment and street G I-b. Cleared away embankment to new loading point and underlying debris to Ptolemaic-Roman floor. Small object and fragments as before.

(2) Avenue G 1
Street between G I-b and [G I-a]. From about 11 a.m. the whole force was put on the debris (upper deposit of decay) between G I-b and [G I-a] clearing also the core of G I-b and moving westwards. A large mound is evidently from the work of Vyse in searching for entrance. The entrance seems to be further west than shown on Perring's Plan.
